HS Information Night – November 6

Dear Parents and Students of 7th and 8th Grades,

We are planning a meeting on campus on Thursday, November 6, 5:30– 7:00 p.m. to offer
information on various high school options, including IB programs,
public schools, and independent schools. Please save the date; details to
follow. If you have any questions or if there is any specific information

Winter Wonderland Dance

The Middle School “Winter Wonderland Dance” will take place on Friday, December 12, from 6 to 9 P.M.  Students volunteers who wish to decorate the auditorium are welcome to do so from 3:15 – 5 P.M. on the same day.  If you wish to volunteer, please tell Mr. G. or Ms. Wallen .  The cost for the dance will be 5 dollars, and should be paid in cash or check at the door upon arrival.

Music suggestions should be shared via google doc with Mr. G.  If you wish to invite non-SDFAS students, please note that they must be either former SDFAS students, or visiting family members.  They must also be current 6th, 7th, or 8th grade students Please ask Ms. Wallen or Mr. G. for details and permission forms.  Winter-Wonderland-Miami

Community Agreements, Rules and Guidelines

SDFAS uses the Pacific Path core value program (Vers le pacifique). The goal of this bilingual program is to foster peaceful behavior through various methods, such as conflict resolution and peer mediation.

The SDFAS staff is committed to the belief that all students have the right to learn in a distraction-free environment and that no student has a right to disrupt the learning environment of any other student. Teachers also have a right to insist on a distraction-free environment in which to teach: no student has a right to disrupt the classroom learning environment.

 Community Agreements

  • Treat others as you would like them to treat you.
  • Respect and tolerance are two important values for all SDFAS community members. Be friendly, be helpful, listen to others, and be open minded. Do not exclude others, make fun of others, or show prejudice.
  • Use good manners, appropriate language, be mindful and polite.
  • Be on time, do not disturb class by arriving late from recess or passing periods.
  • Keep your belongings organized and clean. This includes your locker, school bag and desk.
  • Treat the equipment loaned to you by the school with great care. This includes laptops or tablets, science materials, and books.
  • Make the most of your time at school: listen and participate in class, take initiative, collaborate, ask questions (by raising your hand – .do not disrupt the class and prevent others from enjoying SDFAS learning environment.)
  • Be organized: plan ahead and complete your homework on time. Use your planner efficiently
  • Take care of school property, your own belongings, and help others do the same.

Rules and Guidelines


  • will attend school regularly, arrive on time, and be prepared for class.
  • will bring the necessary materials to class.
  • will follow the school rules and general student rules.
  • will allow others to work undisturbed.
  • will show safe and responsible behavior. No fighting, play fighting, throwing objects, name-calling, pushing, or threatening. No weapons or fascimiles of weapons are allowed at school.
  • will not deface the school or school property. They must show respect for individual as well as collective property.
  • will tell the truth, keep promises, and will not steal.
  • will respect themselves, their peers, the teachers and staff.
  • will use appropriate language and will not use profanity on the playground, in the classroom, or anywhere on the campus.
  • will respect cultural, religious, and / or socio-economic differences.
  • will not leave the school grounds at any time during the school day without written permission and clearance from the office.
  • will be in their assigned play areas during recess and lunch time.
  • will not go into a classroom at any time unless the teacher is present.
  • will not chew gum and/or eat sunflower seeds in the classroom or on the school grounds at any time, including during recess and extracurricular activities.

 Anti-bullying  policy

Bullying is not tolerated at San Diego French-American School. Bullying is a form of harassment and violence and will be treated as such, according to the school’s policies. The school’s bullying policy includes the following:

  • intervention by adults
  • disciplinary actions

Bullying is defined in the following way:

Bullying is exposing a person to abusive actions repeatedly over time. Being aware of children’s teasing and acknowledging injured feelings are always important. Bullying becomes an issue when hurtful or aggressive behavior toward an individual or group appears to be unprovoked, intentional, and (usually) repeated. If you think that you or someone else is being bullied tell your teacher or another adult right away.

 Cheating and Plagiarism

As in any school, integrity and trust are fundamental values. At SDFAS dishonesty will not be tolerated, particularly in the classroom. Students must do their own work and must not cheat on homework, tests, research papers, or in-class assignments. By the same token, plagiarism will not be tolerated, as it is presenting someone else’s work as if the student had written it. Resources, such as those found on the internet, in encyclopedias, periodicals, books, etc., must be attributed to the author in all cases. Sources and authors must be identified when quoting or paraphrasing.

Failure to comply will result in disciplinary measures to be determined by the teacher. The teacher has the right to penalize the student if he/she fails to comply.

 Dress code

The following is the dress code for all students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Children who come to school dressed inappropriately may be asked to change.

Examples of appropriate attire include: long pants, capri pants; or shorts that fall below the midpoint of the thighs; skirts and dresses that do not expose undergarments during playing or bending; and short or long-sleeved shirts that are neat in appearance. Open-toed shoes are forbidden. Middle school students are allowed to wear open-toed/open-back sandals, providing they are the “sling-back” type with a back strap around the ankle. (No flip flops.) Shoes with laces need to be tied at all times.

Examples of inappropriate attire include: oversized sports jerseys, “baggy” pants or other clothing, strapless or midriff tops for girls, tank tops for boys, swimsuits, extreme hairstyles, including colored hair; clothing that exposes undergarments, or any style that is felt by the faculty or administration to be distracting, extravagant or improper for school. SDFAS reserves the right to disapprove of clothing or hairstyles, based on the impression they make, notwithstanding the written dress code.

We recommend that students do not wear valuable jewelry. Hanging earrings are not allowed. Hats or caps are not to be worn in the classroom, and caps are not to be worn backwards.

 Sports and field trip dress code

Students are required to wear the school’s T-shirt on days they have physical education classes. Sport shorts or sweat pants are recommended. Students are required to wear the school polo shirt on most school field trips. Exceptions may made for special occasions, when students may be given the option to wear a dress shirt and pants.

 “Chapeau” tickets

Chapeau Tickets (CT) are given to students to reward outstanding efforts in good conduct or good citizenship. CT can also reward community service at school.

CT can be used to exchange for goodies when the goodies store is open on special MS Days.

 Warning tickets

Any act of inappropriate behavior may be sanctioned by an official Warning Ticket (WT).

A Warning Ticket is a report that can be given by any member of the teaching staff of SDFAS. This report is documented in the school management software (MyStudentsProgress) under the heading Conduct. The report will state the date and location of the incident, the name of the student, the teacher concerned, as well as a detailed report of the incident.

For each official WT parents and other teachers of the class will be informed by the main teacher or MS coordinator. Parents can access their own child’s conduct records. Administrators may access the conduct record of any student.

When can a Warning Ticket be given?

  • Lack of respect towards another student.
  • Lack of respect and/or obedience towards a teacher.
  • Physical or verbal violence, including bullying .
  • Disruptive attitude in class or during lunch or recess.
  • Property damage.
  • Being out of the assigned area during class time lunch, or recess.
  • 2 or 3 tardies, depending upon individual teacher) i.e.those not approved by the office manager / nurse, whether it be for the first period or for any other class during the day.
  • Forgetting materials 2 or 3 times depending on teacher
  • Not completing homework 2 or 3 times depending on teacher
  • Not turning in homework on time. 2 or 3 times, depending on teacher
  • Cheating or plagiarism.
  • Using electronic equipment (cell phone, tablet, camera) without express permission by a teacher.

Depending on the seriousness of the incident, the teacher, the MS Coordinator or the head of school have the right to call the parents directly and / or to ask for a disciplinary meeting. Other consequences may apply.

 Disciplinary measures

Different measures will be taken depending on the number of warnings received by the student:

3 WT = 1 detention + meeting with parents to explain the sanction and find a mutual solution to the problem.

2 WT for the same offence = 1 detention + meeting with parents to explain the sanction and find a mutual solution to the problem.

Two detentions = Disciplinary Council

 Note: Detention may take several forms:

  • Time out during recess: the students has to remain in a designated area of the campus, perform a task (community service; ex: help clean the lunch area, campus clean up)
  • Stay at school after hours or on Saturday with an assignment given by a teacher.

 Goals of the Disciplinary Measures

With this system of warnings and disciplinary measures, the school authorities first try to respond to an attention-seeking act by the student.

The different levels of disciplinary measures helps the student realize that his or her actions are not without consequence and helps to engage his or her sense of social responsibility, both during class and recreation periods.

 All of the above will be taken into account in the citizenship marks awarded to the student on report cards.


7th grade field trip to San Bernardino Mountains, at Pali Institute

The annual 7th grade trip will take place this year during the month of October. This timing, along with the strong educational component of the program, will help students get to know each other better, develop class coherence and teamwork, and create opportunities for self-reliance, leadership, and confidence building, all in a beautiful natural setting in the San Bernadino Mountains, near Lake Arrowhead. Our students have been going to the same location, Pali Institute, for many years, and have had wonderful experiences and memories.


Departure: Monday, October 13 (departure at 7:30 a.m. from SDFAS).

Return: Friday, October 17 (return at approximately 1:30 p.m. to SDFAS).

Location: Pali Institute, an outdoor education school and science camp facility located in the San Bernadino Mountains, near Lake Arrowhead, about 2.5 hours from San Diego.

Travel: By chartered bus. The trip should take about three hours each way.

Sleeping: Students will sleep in single sex cabins.

Activities: Team-building activities, ropes course, leadership, guided hiking experiences, learning about the forest.


6th grade Field trip to Joshua National Park

The annual 6th grade trip will take place this year during the month of October. This timing, along with the strong educational component of the program we have chosen, will help students get to know each other better, develop class coherence and teamwork, and create opportunities for self-reliance and confidence building, all in the beautiful natural setting of Joshua Tree National Park.


Departure: Monday, October 13 (departure at 7:30 a.m. from SDFAS

Return: Friday, October 17 (return at approximately 1:30 p.m. to SDFAS)

Location: Joshua Tree National Park, with the Boojum Institute for Experiential Education. (Visit the website at:

Travel: By chartered bus. The trip should take about three hours each way.

Sleeping: Students will sleep in tents, 3 to a tent, in single sex tents. Students may bring their own sleeping bags and sleeping pads or the Boojum Institute can provide Sleep Kits (sleeping bag, liner, and pad) at a cost of $5 per night, or $20 for the trip. Tents are provided.

During this trip, students will:

  • Develop an increased sense of “team” as a San Diego French American School cohort
  • Improve life skills and interpersonal dynamics through successfully completing shared adventure activities
  • Increase enthusiasm and motivation for school studies and participation in academic work following the event
  • Have fun and enjoy selves during event
  • Study field science, natural history, and ecology; gain environmental citizenship skills
  • Develop outdoor skills, self-reliance and confidence during outdoor adventures
  • Build friendships and respectful relationships with San Diego French American School students and faculty


Activities: Team-building activities, landscape explorations, guided hiking experiences.
