On September 25, 2018, SDFAS HS Placement Counselor led her yearly High School Information Night in the auditorium. Carefully crafted and highly informational, the HS Night gives families an opportunity to listen to a strong panel of SDFAS alumni, and get a feel of the “After SDFAS” experience in the San Diego area. Alumni from 9th to 12th grade from several private and public High Schools shared their stories: transition, academics, choices and goals, activities in which they engaged, and their vision for their future.
If you come around the science lab on a Thursday, you will find a group of active builders with tools, enthusiastically banging on nails with their hammers. For what purpose? The middle school students enrolled in Ms. Jacoway’s MakerSpace elective are currently building wooden outdoor games to be placed in the middle school area, for the enjoyment of all and everyone to play with!
We made La Jolla Light local newspaper again! Thank you to all who participated and made the “Chess Peace” movie production possible.
Ms. Regan, our English and Social Studies Teacher, is implementing her Classroom Economy Program in 6th grade this school year again.
The Classroom Economy Program enables any educator to teach children financial responsibility through fun, experiential learning.
It is a simple classroom economic system based on the idea that students need to earn school “dollars” so that they can rent their own desks. By bringing real-world scenarios into the classroom, students see the impact of their decisions to save, spend, and budget.
If you are curious about the program, ask your student and/or visit www.myclassroomeconomy.org.
Middle School Clubs : promoting Student Engagement and Action through a diversity of learning experiences and projects
The middle school Clubs are specifically designed by the Middle School faculty to enhance the SDFAS middle school experience with purposeful, meaningful and carefully crafted activities. The brand new L.I.V.E. club (Leadership, Initiative, Volunteerism and Empathy) is the brainchild of Ms. Aseltine, the English and Social Studies teacher.
The primary Objectives of LIVE Club are to develop student leadership and initiative on campus and in our community, develop student passion for school and community engagement, raise awareness about global and local issues through facilitated discussions and events on campus, and develop student self and social awareness of one’s role at school, in the community, and in the world.
Initiatives this school year will focus on areas such as Sustainability and Environment Responsibility on campus, and Poverty and Homelessness in the San Diego area.
Watch out for the other clubs’ initiatives! All MS clubs have now started.
Pi Day will be entirely organized by Mr. Giot and his Math Club students, La Troupe French Theater Club will perform their play twice in the Spring with Mme Addo, the News!News! Newsletter club already published their first special back to school edition with Mr. Prud’homme, students delight and marvel in discovering Antique Languages and Civilizations with Mme Addo, and the Junior Model United Nations Club is full again with 18 students with Ms. Aseltine.
Under Mme Addo’s guidance, middle school students will be fully in charge of several festive events which are embedded in their school life this year: students will organize the Halloween Celebration in middle school, the three MS Dances (December 7, March 15 and May 31), Spirit Week and also take the lead for potlucks. Managing their own dedicated budget, they will learn how to put money to good and cost effective use, and act as leaders to engage their peers, for the enjoyment and well-being of the whole community.
The first meeting of the Comité des Fêtes will be held on Monday, September 24.
Ms. Seidel’s three PE Mantras are in full swing on the field during PE classes as middle school students experience Ultimate Frisbee. The three R are not only the pillars of PE classes but also guiding principles for life on campus and outside of campus:
The middle school students were recently making measurements in front of the Administrative building with Mr. Johnston, as part of the mixed media elective program. Wondering why? Surprise! Watch for intriguing Art installations around campus this year!
