Mr. Yamashita’s visit on campus

By Bénédicte Brouder

Mr. Yamashita is a survivor of the Nagasaki atomic bomb, a UN Peace ambassador, and an artist. He lives on Mexico.

On March 19, 2019, all students from 5th to 8th grades had a chance to listen to his testimony as he shared his story in the auditorium. Then, he went into all middle school classrooms, and students were able to address their questions in a more intimate space.

The event, carefully prepared by the 6th graders with Mr. Prud’homme, was a unique opportunity to raise awareness on how important it is for each of us to make a stance for world peace and the destructions of atomic weapons.

Congratulations to all 6th graders and their teacher for their excellent introduction to our speaker at the presentation, and thank you to Teresa Sekiguchi who made this possible.

Music program in partnership with the Center for World Music

By Bénédicte Brouder

The music program started this week in middle school. The Center for World Music has brought in to the school a wealth of various instruments, music styles, and artists for the past few years. This trimester, 8th grade will learn how to play the Banjo in the “clawhammer” style! They will also have the privilege to go on a field trip to the Deering Banjo Factory later on in the Spring, which is the largest company making Banjo in the USA.

What is SLAM?

Today, Ms. Addo crafted a workshop in order to kick off the SLAM project! In April, SDFAS will welcome the French vice-champion of SLAM on campus. Teachers and students will benefit from workshops with him, and learn the ropes of the SLAM art!
