On June 14, 2019, we awarded the selected charities with the money raised by the collective effort at the Jogathon! It was an inspiring and lively forum, with 3 on 4 of the organizations in attendance, and an improvised energetic soccer game on the field right after ( 5th graders vs 7th graders).
The charities awarded whose representatives attended were:
– Haiti Futur with Mireille Desrosiers
– Project Edeline with Stephanie , Edeline herself and … her cousin, Olrish Saurel who is a professional soccer player (defender – Miami United FC) – He was a star and an inspiring figure to the children, and the reason why we moved onto the field to play soccer!
– Beyond the Surface Foundation with Emi Koch and Niko, with two inspiring videos of their work, illustrating how the money gathered by the Jogathon efforts will be put to good use.
One of the best Jogathon Forum, honestly!
Media Education in 8th grade: sharing passion and experience with Mr. Schuman
On June 14, 2019, thanks to Mme Addo, our 7th and 8th French Teacher, Mr. Schuman came in the classroom and engage 8th graders in a discussion on media and the work of reporters and journalists. Thank you, Mr. Schuman, for sharing your extensive experience, making it colorful with lively anecdotes and stories!
On Wednesday, June 12th, the 7th-grade classes presented their projects that they had been working on in Science, Language Arts and Math for the past month and a half. These presentations represented the culmination of their work in developing public spaces for communities similar to cities in Southern California. Ms. Jacoway, M. Giot, and Ms. Aseltine moderated this “town-hall” style meeting, after which there was a Q&A for each group and their proposed design. The goal of this presentation was for students to convey the impact their public space would have on their local community and ecosystems, and to persuade the community (parents and other 7th graders!) that their design was viable and beneficial.
We applaud the students for the quality of their work and presentations! We also applaud Ms. Jacoway and Ms. Aseltine for the well crafted, purposeful, meaningful and relevant interdisciplinary project they designed together. Purposeful learning is paramount to support students as they engage with the world around them!
On June 9, 2019, Mme Addo represented SDFAS at the Project Edeline fundraiser. Under the umbrella of youth without borders, project Edeline gives children of Haiti a chance for a brighter future. Mme Addo has run a penpal program between the SDFAS 7th graders and students in Haiti for the past two years. We genuinely applaud her constant energy and dedication to build bridges between SDFAS and Haiti, and give SDFAS families an opportunity to help in effective and concrete ways. Thank you also to the families who attended the event!
The group came back on Saturday night. Still, a few pictures from Quebec City on Friday, with the visit to the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the visit to the Huron Village.
Enjoy!
