April 26, 2020
Dear SDFAS Community,
We hope this message finds all of you well, your children rested and energized, and everyone in good spirits despite the challenges of life in confinement.
Distance Learning Continues
Following our communication of April 12 (Covid-19 Update #12), it remains clear that we will continue distance learning into the month of May. We remain attentive to the emerging guidelines of local and state public health departments and government authorities and continue to monitor what is still a very fluid situation. We will communicate with you right away if and when conditions allow for the reopening of the campus.
Preparations for Returning to Campus
We are eager to return to campus when it is safe to do so. Based on guidance we are receiving from state and local health officials, we expect to have classes on campus this fall at the latest. We understand that it is important for our students to be back on campus with their teachers and peers. There are specific guidelines we will need to follow when we reopen the campus. The leadership of the school has been working hard to develop plans for re-opening the campus with the health and safety of our community in mind.
Given the uncertainty about a return to campus prior to mid-June, the school is currently planning a remote summer camp program for interested families. More information will follow soon.
SDFAS Financial Situation
As many other schools and businesses, SDFAS has been impacted by Covid-19. Due to years of prudent financial management, the school will be able to continue providing the best possible bilingual education. Nevertheless, we understand that economic uncertainty and travel and relocation restrictions may impact our enrollment and therefore our financial position. We also anticipate increased operational costs associated with safety measures for Covid-19. We are thankful to have received a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan this week (click here for FAQ about the PPP loan) to support our operations during this crisis period. Our priority remains to deliver the best possible bilingual education while taking care of the health and safety of our community.
Student Financial Assistance
As previously communicated, at this time the school is offering immediate Covid-19 financial assistance to families who have been impacted by the economic conditions stemming from the pandemic. Financial aid is supported by annual giving and philanthropic donations made to the Fund for the Future, established as last year’s and this year’s Gala Fund-A-Need. We anticipate that the number of families receiving financial assistance will increase due to the economic impact of the pandemic.
As announced before the break, in mid-May we will host a virtual Gala to benefit the Fund for the Future, to further enhance professional development and financial aid to families in need. More information will follow soon.
Modifications to the School Calendar
In the event distance learning continues into June, please be reminded that over the course of the remaining seven weeks, there will be a four-day week every two weeks, with catch-up days for teachers and students on:

With your support, SDFAS will thrive into the future and continue to deliver on its special mission to cultivate confident, responsible and engaged global citizens and deliver the best possible bilingual education. There is perhaps no greater investment in today’s world than your commitment to an exceptional multilingual education for our children. For the past six weeks since the crisis took hold, inspired by the adaptability, resilience and tenacity of our community, I look to the future of the school with great optimism and do not lose sight of our long term objectives.
Je vous souhaite à tous une très bonne reprise des apprentissages à distance.
Prenez bien soin de vous,
