Covid 19 – Update #18

Dear SDFAS Community,

I hope you and your families are doing well. I would like to provide an update on multiple aspects of our campus reopening plan and progress to date:

Campus Update – Preschool

Per Echo Info this past Friday, we are pleased to announce the limited reopening of the Preschool campus as of June 1 exclusively for the children of “essential workers“. If you qualify, please click here to indicate your interest by midnight tonight. The ongoing distance learning program will continue its normal schedule in parallel.

Campus Update – K/Elementary

We are prepared to reopen the campus in K/Elementary for a very limited trial experience for a single grade (to be determined) but we will only be able to do this if confinement and no-gathering orders are eased by authorities. The ongoing distance learning program will continue its normal schedule in parallel.

Campus Update – Middle School

Given ongoing confinement and no-gathering orders, at this time we are not unable to provide a trial program and do not anticipate reopening the campus for MS students before the “rentrée des classes” in August. As expected, the ongoing distance learning program will continue its normal schedule.

Full Campus Reopening Plans

We anticipate a full reopening of the campus in August. As explained in the Head’s weekly video message this past Friday (click here), we are thinking broadly, planning intensively, and elaborating different scenarios. Program, schedule, space usage, and school calendar will be organized in ways that allow for distance learning aspects to occur in tandem with a safe on-campus experience for students and staff. This is complex work and requires changes and improvements to our space. Planning and preparation will continue into the summer.

In that context we are excited to share the news that we have come to an agreement with the La Jolla Preschool Academy to take over their campus located on 6485 Cardeno Drive; contingent on approval in June by the SDUSD Board of Education. If approved, the additional space will be an important aspect of space usage planning to meet physical distancing requirements for our anticipated full reopening of the campus in August. Among other benefits, such as increased number of classrooms, bathrooms, and playgrounds, this additional space will put the school in the unique position of being able to offer an additional entry / exit point for the campus.

On-Campus Enrollment Capacity

Teaching and learning on campus in a manner that respects physical distancing greatly limits our enrollment capacity in each grade. Each classroom will accommodate only a restricted number of students. The school needs families to enroll by June 1 in order to guarantee spaces on campus in August. If you have questions or concerns, I invite you to contact Isabelle Gilet ( or Mark Rosenblum ( at your earliest convenience.

Have a smooth week #10,
