Covid-19 Update #22

Dear SDFAS community,

I hope this message finds you all well and enjoying the first weeks of summer. I am writing to share some information and a few updates.

Please be reminded that we reopened the Preschool for the children of SDFAS essential workers on June 1. Transitioning from there to the first weeks of summer, Preschool camp began on June 22, We currently have three groups of happy children attending, including students from outside the SDFAS community. All are following the required health screening, safety and sanitation protocols. It brings us great joy to once again here the sounds of children laughing and playing on campus. In addition, please be informed that we completed all required plans and County of San Diego paperwork to formally reopen the K-8 side of the main campus on June 22, the first day of our normal summer camp season. One group of happy K-2 campers last week successfully completed their first week of camp. There will be two groups of K-2 campers during the coming week.

As we continue to work intensively on our school’s reopening plan, I can’t reiterate enough the importance of our newly acquired space on the former La Jolla Preschool Academy site. Our master campus as of July 1st will formally be comprised of three campus zones:

•”Mountain View” campus (Soledad Mountain Road entrance and current location of the kindergarten, elementary, middle school and main administrative buildings)

•”Canyon View” campus (Soledad Mountain Road entrance and current location of the Preschool classrooms and playground)

•”Ocean View” campus (Cardeno Avenue entrance and future location of five additional classrooms and added administrative/faculty offices)

The addition of the Ocean View campus means greater ease in building a master schedule for three different school divisions that will include staggered arrival and departure times, added entrances for more efficient health screening of students as they arrive to school each day, and classroom space allocation comfortably allowing for proper physical distancing. The new campus area also means added bathrooms for both students and faculty as well as additional recess and play spaces.

After careful consideration, we have decided to leave the school calendar for 2020-2021 unchanged. The first day of school is still anticipated to be on Monday, August 31, 2020. At the same time, we do ask everyone to prepare themselves to be flexible if ever changes are required at the end of the summer or once the school year has begun.

Teaching and Learning Model for 2020-2021

Please rest assured that we are still planning schedules, staffing and curriculum design and delivery models for each division that will allow for students to learn on-campus or, if necessary (or by choice), at home.

Summer Travel

It is important for you to know at this point that any families traveling over the summer abroad or domestically on airplanes will be expected to quarantine for 14 days prior to a child’s first day back on the school campus. Please keep this in mind and plan accordingly with respect to our anticipated reopening of school at the end of August.

Presidential Proclamation about Visa (J, H and L)

Please get in touch with us if you have any questions or concerns with respect to the president’s recent proclamation restricting travel out of the country, and return back into the country, for persons living and working in the United States on J, H or L visas.
